klaut alles! (steal everything!), 1996
Installation, Kiosk, Bern. Curated by Katrien Reist and Beate Engel.
Chiarenza & Hauser taped the Kiosk hut in the Lorraine quarter, used as an art space. Inside they mount a large-scale photograph, which shows an abandoned and dilapidated room. On the display window they paste the exhortation “Klaut alles!” [Steal everything!]. When passers-by approach, a motion sensor switches on three spotlights that plunge the interior, the window text as well as the involuntary viewers in glaring light, as if they have just been caught helping themselves to public property.
